If Green Square Health is your regular practice, registering with us on MyMedicare is one of the most useful two-minute admin tasks you can do this year. It’s free, voluntary, and run by the Australian Government — and since late 2025, being registered has come with practical benefits that directly affect your Medicare rebates.
What is MyMedicare?
MyMedicare is a voluntary patient registration program that formally links you with your regular general practice. Nothing about your care changes day to day — you can still see any doctor, here or anywhere else — but Medicare now attaches several benefits to that registered relationship.
Why register?
1. Telehealth rebates without the 12-month rule.Normally, Medicare only rebates a phone or video consultation if you’ve seen the practice face-to-face within the previous 12 months. MyMedicare-registered patients are exempt from this rule — so if you’re travelling, unwell at home, or simply overdue for a visit, a rebated telehealth consult with your own GP is still available.
2. Medicare rebates for longer phone consultations. For unregistered patients, only short phone consultations attract a Medicare rebate. If you’re registered with us, longer phone consultations are also rebateable — which means a smaller out-of-pocket cost when a proper, unhurried phone call is what’s clinically needed.
3. Your chronic condition care plan stays with your regular GP.Under the care planning framework introduced in 2025, GP Chronic Condition Management Plans and their reviews are anchored to your registered practice. Registering keeps your plan, your reviews and your history in one place, with the doctors who know you.
Who can register?
You can register with Green Square Health if you have a Medicare card (or DVA card) and have had two face-to-face GP visits with us in the past 24 months.
Haven’t had two visits yet? You may still be able to register if any of these apply:
- Your family is here. If your child (under 18) is registered with us, or your own parent or guardian is registered with us, you can register too.
- You followed your GP to our practice. If you were registered with your preferred GP at their previous practice, your registration can move with them.
- Special circumstances. Exemptions apply for people experiencing hardship — including family and domestic violence, homelessness, or other extenuating circumstances. Just speak with our reception team; this is handled sensitively and without fuss.
Registering children and teenagers
- Children under 14 are registered by a parent or guardian, who provides consent on their behalf. The easiest way is through your own myGov account, where your child is linked to your Medicare card.
- Young people aged 14 to 17 can register themselves, with their own consent — no parent or guardian needed.
- A handy family loop: registering your child with us also makes you eligible to register, even if you haven’t had two visits yet — and vice versa. Most families can get everyone registered in one sitting.
How to register
Option 1 — Online through myGov (easiest for most people).Sign in to myGov, open Medicare, and look for MyMedicare registration. Search for Green Square Health (Waterloo NSW 2017), select us as your practice, and submit. The Government’s step-by-step guide is here: how to register — our reception team can also SMS you this link.
Option 2 — Ask at reception. We can begin the registration from our end at your next visit. You’ll then receive a prompt in your myGov Medicare account to confirm.
Option 3 — Paper form.If myGov isn’t your thing, we have the paper registration form at reception — fill in pages 1 and 3 (page 2 is optional and can be skipped) and our team will lodge the registration on your behalf.
Registration takes about 24 hours to come into effect.
Common questions
Does registering lock me in? No. You can still see any GP anywhere, and you can withdraw or move your registration to another practice at any time.
Does it cost anything or change my fees? Registration itself is free and doesn’t change our billing. Its main effect on your wallet is the extra telehealth rebates above.
Could I already be registered somewhere else without knowing? It happens — some clinics register patients on their behalf. You can check your current registration any time in myGov (Medicare → MyMedicare), and moving your registration to Green Square Health takes only a couple of minutes. If we’re the practice you actually use, it’s worth making sure your registration says so.
Which doctor am I registered with? You register with the practice, and you can nominate a preferred GP. Your care remains flexible across our whole team.
