Why I Get My Flu Shot – And Why You Should Too
As we move into winter, I’m already starting to see more patients with sore throats, fevers, and coughs. It’s a reminder that flu season is well and truly here – and with it comes an important opportunity to protect ourselves and each other with the annual influenza vaccine.
Each year, the flu shot changes slightly to match the most common strains we expect to see. That’s why it’s important to get vaccinated every year – even if you had one last year.
Who should get the flu vaccine?
The short answer: nearly everyone. The flu vaccine is recommended for all people aged 6 months and older. And if you’re in one of the higher-risk groups, you’re eligible for a free government-funded vaccine. These include:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over
- Children aged 6 months to under 5 years
- People over 65
- Pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
- Anyone with chronic health conditions like severe asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or a weakened immune system
Even if you’re not in one of these categories, you’re still at risk of getting and spreading the flu. At Green Square Health, we offer private flu vaccinations for $25 if you’re not eligible for the free one.
A few things to keep in mind
Before your appointment, it’s helpful to let us know if you:
- Have had a serious reaction to a previous flu vaccine (we’ll assess whether it’s still safe for you)
- Have a fever over 38.5°C on the day (we’ll reschedule your appointment)
- Have a history of Guillain-Barré Syndrome or have had a transplant (we’ll follow specific clinical guidance)
